Can Hardwood Floors Really Be Installed in One Day?

I’ve been installing hardwood floors for about 20 years, and one question I hear more and more is:

“Can you really install hardwood floors in one day?”

The answer is yes — sometimes we absolutely can.

But after doing this work for two decades, I can also tell you that every house and every floor is different. I would never promise a homeowner that we can finish a floor in one day without first understanding exactly what we are walking into.

For me and my team, doing a job quickly is never more important than doing it correctly.

What Makes a One-Day Installation Possible?

There are jobs where my team arrives in the morning, gets right to work, and by the end of the day the homeowner is looking at a completely transformed space.

Those are great days.

But a successful one-day installation usually happens because several things line up properly.

The square footage matters. The layout of the house matters. The condition of the existing floor and subfloor matters. The type and quality of the new flooring matter. Even details like doorways, closets, transitions, stairs and furniture can affect how quickly we can work.

And, of course, the experience of the installation team makes a big difference.

After working together on so many flooring projects, my crew and I have developed a system. Everyone knows what needs to happen and in what order. That allows us to work efficiently without rushing through the details.

There is a big difference between working fast because you are rushing and working efficiently because you have experience.

The Condition of Your Existing Floor Matters

One of the biggest factors is what we find underneath the existing flooring.

Sometimes we remove an old floor and find a solid, level subfloor underneath. That's an ideal situation.

Other times, we find something that needs attention.

The subfloor may be uneven. There may be damaged areas. We may discover squeaks, moisture concerns, old adhesive, loose boards or other issues that need to be corrected before we install the new hardwood.

After 20 years in this business, I've learned that you don't ignore those problems just because you want to say you finished the job in one day.

The floor underneath your hardwood is just as important as the hardwood you see on top.

If it needs additional preparation, we take the time to do it properly.

The Quality of the Hardwood Makes a Difference Too

Not all hardwood flooring is the same.

The quality and consistency of the material can have a major effect on an installation. Good-quality flooring that has been properly selected and prepared can make the installation process much smoother.

With lower-quality or inconsistent material, installers may spend considerably more time sorting boards, checking pieces, making adjustments and working around imperfections.

As an installer, I look at more than just the color of a floor.

I look at the milling, the straightness of the boards, the quality of the material, how the pieces fit together and how that particular product is going to perform in the home.

Those are things you learn to recognize after years of working with hardwood.

Square Footage Isn't the Whole Story

People often ask me, “How many square feet can you install in a day?”

Square footage is important, but it doesn't tell me everything.

Five hundred square feet of an open, empty room with a good subfloor can be a very different installation from 500 square feet divided between hallways, closets, multiple rooms and complicated transitions.

A smaller project can sometimes take longer than a larger one simply because there are more cuts and details involved. That's why I prefer to look at the actual project before giving someone a realistic timeline.

Experience Makes a Difference

After about 20 years of installing hardwood floors, there are things I can recognize very quickly that I wouldn't have recognized when I first started.

You learn how to look at a room and anticipate where problems may occur.

You learn how to organize a project so your team isn't wasting time.

You learn when you can move quickly — and, more importantly, when you need to slow down.

My team is a huge part of that.

A good flooring crew works together. Each person understands his role, and when everyone is experienced and organized, we can accomplish an incredible amount of work in a day.

That's one of the reasons some of our customers are surprised by how quickly their homes can be transformed.

So, Can We Install Your Hardwood Floor in One Day?

Possibly — and in many situations, yes.

But I don't believe in promising every customer a one-day installation just because it sounds good. Before I tell you how long your project should take, I want to know what flooring we're installing, how many square feet we're working with, what the layout looks like, what flooring is currently there and what condition the subfloor is in.

If everything is ready and the project is a good candidate for a one-day installation, my team and I can work very efficiently. If the floor needs more preparation or the project requires additional time, I'll tell you that too.

I'd rather give a homeowner an accurate answer than make a promise that compromises the quality of the finished floor.

My Advice After 20 Years of Installing Hardwood Floors

If you're choosing a flooring contractor, don't choose someone simply because they tell you they can do the job the fastest. Ask how they plan to do it. Ask what happens if they discover a problem with the subfloor. Ask about the flooring you're purchasing. Ask about the installation process.

A hardwood floor is something you're going to walk on and look at every day for years. Saving a few hours during installation isn't worth cutting corners.

When the conditions are right, though, it's amazing what an experienced team can accomplish in a single day.

I've seen homeowners leave for work with one floor in their house and come home to what feels like a completely different room.

That's one of my favorite parts of what we do.
